Meat and fish industry, the culprits of enviromental destruction

The main leading cause for environment destruction is the meat and fish industry. Overconsumption of water, greenhouse emits of farming animals, pollution, species extinction, deforestation, habitats destruction, and world hunger are the results of animal exploitation.

Water Consumption

Fracking (the process of drilling down into the earth before a high-pressure water mixture is directed at the rock to release the gas inside) consumes huge amounts of water. Specifically at the U.S.A almost 100 billion gallons of water are consumed for fracking, and at the same time, cattle meat industry again at the U.S.A consumes 34 trillion gallons of water.

The average citizen of California consumes 5678 liters of water per day. Half of 5678 liters is related with meat and dairy consumption. Meat and dairy are very demanding in water because animals consume cereals  which are produced with a lot of water , so all the water used for animal raising ( water for cereals production, water as a drink for cows e.t.c)  is considered as a part of water fingerprint of this product.

There is a huge effort for reducing the consumption of water in the house from environmental teams (they urge us to close the tap as we brush our teeth etc.) but domestic use takes only the 5% of the total water consumption while 55% goes to livestock. This is because they need about 9,500 liters of water to produce 450gr of beef.

A 110gr hamburger needs 2500 liters of water to produce. Eating a hamburger is like doing a shower for two months.

Greenhouse emissions

Animal breeding generates more greenhouse gases than cars, trains, ships and planes all together. This is due to the fact that cows produce a large amount of methane from the digestion process. Methane from cattle is 25-100 times more destructive than carbon dioxide from cars. The UN, along with other organizations, has said that cattle play a major role not only in global warming, but they are also the main causes of resource depletion and environmental degradation that are devastating the planet today.  (UN 2006)

In 2009, an analysis came out in the spotlight. That analysis had to do with the anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, which found that livestock farming was not responsible for 18% as declared by the UN (2006), but for 51% of greenhouse gases. This catastrophic number is due to the deforestation of the pastures for grazing, breathing and waste producing animals.  (Worldwatch 2009)

Without the use of natural gas, oil or fuel, from now on, we will exceed our greenhouse gas emission limit of 565 giant tones to 2030, even without calculating electricity and energy sectors, only by rearing and consuming animals.


53,000 pounds of livestock manure is produced every second in the US alone. These are quite a few wastes per year to cover the entire area of San Francisco, New York, Tokyo, Paris, New Delhi, Hong Kong, London, Rio de Janeiro, Delaware, Bali, Costa Rica and Denmark together.

Species extinction

10,000 years ago, free animals accounted for 99% of the biomass, and people were only 1%. Today, 10,000 years later, we humans and animals we own, represent 98% of the biomass and wildlife only 2%.

Researchers agree that the main cause of species extinction is the overgrazing and loss of habitats from livestock farming and over-fishing in the oceans.

Today we are experiencing the largest extinction of species that has existed for 65 million years. The tropical forests are destroyed at a rate of 4 acres per second and the driving force behind them is human intervention. The forests are stripped to set up grazing grounds to feed farming animals. It is estimated that every day more than 100 species of animals, insects and plants are lost due to the destruction of tropical forests, where livestock farming is the first cause again.


Due to overfishing by 2048 there will be dead zones in the oceans, meaning we will have oceans without fish according to the predictions of the scientists.

The way fishing is done today is with inconceivably large nets to respond to the current situation. For every 450 grams of fish caught, about another 2.2 kilos of non-caught species (e.g. dolphins, sharks, sea turtles, whales) are also caught. That’s also known as side-by-side fishing. About 28,000,000,000 animals were taken from the oceans last year and they will never have the opportunity to recover because they do not multiply so quickly and man does not give them the chance.


The tropical forests are the earth’s lungs. They absorb co2 and release oxygen. 4,000 square meters of tropical rainforests are destroyed per second. This is tantamount to destroying a football field 11×11 every second.

91% of the loss of Amazon forest so far is due to livestock farming. It is estimated that palm oil is responsible for the deforestation of 10 million hectares of forest, but again compared to cattle farming and the cultivation of their food it’s a small amount of hectares. Cattle farming and cultivation of their food are responsible for 56 million hectares of forests that have been lost until now. In particular, the Amazon forest is estimated to disappear over the next 10 years.

World Hunger

We grow enough food in the world to feed 12-15 billion people. Otherwise, the human population amounts to only 7 billion, and at the same time 1/7 of human population is starving. Every day, 50% of cereals and legumes grown all over the world are given to the  farming animals.

At the same time 82% of the world’s hungry children live in countries where feed is given as food in livestock systems, and animals are slaughtered and eaten by more affluent people in developed countries.

The human population consumes a total of 20 million liters of water per day and eats 9.5 billion kilos of food, as opposed to 1.5 billion cows worldwide drinking 170 billion liters of water per day, and eating 60 billion kilos of food.


How to deal with these industries? The decision of The Ethical Court is boycotagge. A boycott is an act of voluntary and intentional abstention from using, buying, or dealing with a person, organization, or country as an expression of protest, usually for social, political, or environmental reasons. The purpose of a boycott is to inflict some economic loss on the target, or to indicate a moral outrage, to try to compel the target to alter an objectionable behavior. Sometimes, a boycott can be a form of consumer activism, sometimes called moral purchasing. We can’t fight this problem if we keep paying the culprits for what they are doing. The culprits are the industries. But behind the industries it’s all of us.
